Mobile telephony has gone through several stages before reaching the impressive video phones that we see today.

There was the analog period, the 1980s, with its phones bigger than a suitcase (not to mention the antenna 3 meters long): reserved primarily for the professional world, she has not had a real growth among the general public.
Then the GSM, whose name tells you perhaps vaguely familiar. Without going into technical details (not only because it is irrelevant but because my knowledge is still limited (yes …)), the GSM standard allows for a much better sound quality, a “snap grid” much more efficient … This is the standard that everyone uses today, although it has shown some improvement, GPRS & EDGE standards not to mention them. Specifically, these standards can increase the connection speed, that is to say the amount of information transmitted over a given period.
Roughly speaking, surf the internet by a GSM connection is five times slower than a connection “classic” (with the modem making noises chelou to connect), two times faster with a GPRS connection (it’s still slow, when you’re used to ADSL), and EDGE achieves the equivalent of half a basic ADSL connection … knowing that these data remain theoretical (that is to say, observed in the laboratory with a phone welded to the array antenna).
Of course, you need a compatible phone with a particular standard, and today almost all mobile phones are GPRS compatible. If you do not use voting phone as a phone, this option does is useless (except for the seller to show that to you, you will not make it …)
For some time, one sees the famous 3G. 3G for 3rd generation (and there are people paid to find names like that …), its technical name is UMTS (as it is to do the handsome front of the seller). Specifically, this standard provides the equivalent of an ADSL connection on your mobile phone, at a rate sufficient for multimedia applications, such as video telephony, music downloads etc. …. The phones must of course be adapted to this standard: more larger, heavier, less autonomy, like any new technology, there remains room for improvement. All UMTS phones are backward compatible GSM (GPRS even …).
Remains to note that, contrary to developments in the GSM network are content perfectly in place, the UMTS standard requires the establishment of a new network (radio frequencies are not the same …) So, for now, exit the idea of the beautiful in “visiophonant” the summit of Mont Blanc. While the UMTS network becomes denser by the day, it does for the moment that the major French cities. You can of course call normally on the GSM network standard, as with any mobile phone. Note that Bouygues offers only EDGE, so no video calling!
True idea or marketing stunt?
Here is a personal opinion, everyone is free to think what they want (and make an article for esseclive:-p).
All who have tried the discussion via webcam on MSN know that it’s not super developed. Now imagine the same thing on a cell phone screen, on a bus with noise (to use the pub SFR), with a headset. Ben good there, that’s 3G.
SFR (for example) welcomes its first 500,000 3G subscribers, a year after its launch. (Figure of Figaro this morning, we find inspiration where you can). Knowing that SFR has more than 10 million customers, it has been 5% of people who might be able to receive video calls … Feel free to offer compatible phones around you, but we must recognize that for now you will not see not the utility of this new feature offered by 3G. Of course, it must be that there are some who launched the movement, I agree, but if you can avoid being pigeon tester I find it best …
Especially since the 3G is not free, “included” in the packages generally, it is actually counted as twice a normal communication. With regard to ancillary services such as downloading music, why not, but then having to change phone / package …
In addition there are great chances that the television service, the most used option for now, is proposed for a high price once the UMTS adopted by a suitable number of customers. Let me explain: TV phone does not use any of the same process as conventional television. The latter is broadcast by radio, cable, satellite: it’s almost as if you were to express yourself in a room: 1, 3, 10 people it’s the same thing. However the TV via UMTS is transmitted by radio waves individually for each phone: If you were to call at 1, 3, 10 people, this is no longer the same! Hence saturations network to come … In short television will quickly pay, and should not be considered a real argument to move to 3G.
Here, you’ll understand I’m not really excited about the 3G, for now anyway. Except that I do not think it necessarily cool to see the head of its correspondent in the morning upon awakening, I think this technology is still too young to be really interesting. Is of course the fact that UMTS phones are generally very advanced technologically, and allow her to listen to MP3 or videos (not necessarily downloaded over 3G, but simply placed on a memory card) or to manage his schedule. But we must not forget its main use, and 150 grams in the pocket all day is not really nice. Of course, a 3G package can be interesting depending on your consumption profile, (all options can be included etc …) but generally proves too much / not enough for 3G.

We have seen that the mobile phone has gradually evolved from 1G analog networks and not to cellular networks and 2G digital cellular, whose implementation has accelerated in the 90s thanks to joint decisions made by the GSM group. Network transmission of voice, a technical was set up to provide the data transfer also to [...]

The European 3G: the UMTS
Written by: admin on April 8, 2012 @ 11:05 am
There are several forms of 3G in the world, especially the CDMA2000 present in the United States, the UMTS-based foundations of GSM in Europe and one last comer, who is not yet commercially deployed: the Chinese TD-SCDMA, stepbrother Asian UMTS, which it shares certain characteristics. The UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) is the name given [...]

The use of 3G
Written by: admin on April 5, 2012 @ 11:02 am
3G has opened the door to uses that do not achieve the rates of 2G networks and for generating new revenues for operators. If video telephony has been put forward to the launch of 3G services, he quickly had to face the evidence that it did not meet expectations. Most appreciated by users, but having [...]

HSDPA, even more than 3G
Written by: admin on April 1, 2012 @ 10:59 am
In the same way as 2G networks have evolved in rates between the GPRS and EDGE enhancement, 3G UMTS networks have an enhanced mode called 3.5G (or in some 3G operators) in the form of technology HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access). In reality the HSDPA is part of a larger whole, said HSPA, including [...]

3G networks represent a major evolution from the 2G. Voice services remain the prerogative of the latter, it is the mobile networks who profit from the much higher speeds, especially with the arrival of HSDPA and create new uses. 3G helped develop many areas: downloading music, watching videos or television, the development of mobile Internet, [...]
